#EBW25 Previews: State-of-the-art speaker for 7A ‘Green Biobanking: Paving the Path to Sustainable Practices’
Monika Valjan, MA, Biobank Graz, will be the state-of-the-art speaker leading the panel session ‘Green biobanking: Paving the path to sustainable practices‘. We have profiled her biography and abstract here.
Monika Valjan, MA
Monika Valjan, MA, holds a degree in media studies and has been the managing director of Biobank Graz since 2021. In 2017, she successfully led the project ‘Reorganization of Biobank Graz according to Lean Hospital Management principles,’ which has now been completed. She also manages WP4 ‘Environmental Sustainability and Biobanking’ at BBMRI.at.
Abstract: Can biobanks be greener?
This lecture will provide a general overview of the demanding infrastructure necessary for biobanks along with practical considerations regarding energy and resource requirements.
Typical activities and resources that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions will be discussed. Understanding the carbon footprint of these activities, how it can be measured, and subsequently reduced, is of significant importance and will be the focus of this presentation. A basic method to estimate a biobanks CO2 footprint will be introduced including practical experiences from the ongoing project at Biobank Graz. Finally, reflections on potential strategies for energy reduction, resource and waste prevention aim to inspire initial activities towards sustainable biobanking in everyday operations.
The observation and detailed knowledge of a biobank’s carbon footprint allows biobanks to reduce the energy demand of machinery and infrastructure, be prepared for blackout concept considerations, and to compare the environmental impacts of certain processes, all while achieving potential costs reductions.
