
#EBW25 Previews: 10D: Emerging EU Regulations Unveiled: Latest ELSI Developments and National Perspectives
This session explores the transformative impact of new EU regulations on biobanking and their alignment with national laws, focusing on ethical, legal and societal implications (ELSI). Attendees will gain insight into recent EU directives, their implications for consent, data governance and cross-border collaboration, as well as strategies for harmonising national regulations with EU frameworks.

Dr. Anne Costello
Dr. Anne Costello is a Project Officer in the Research Strategy and Funding Directorate of the Irish Health Research Board. Anne was previously a Programme Manager at the National Office for Research Ethics Committees (NREC) in Ireland and established and managed the REC, which delivered a national ethics opinion for the National Irish Covid-19 Biobank (NICB).
In the absence of national legislation for biobanking in Ireland, Anne managed the development of an Irish ethical biobanking framework. Anne has also delivered training in ethical biobanking and is involved with the ESBB ELSI group, working towards the development of an ethics guideline for biological sample sharing.
Dr. Vita Rovite
Dr. Vita Rovite has been head of the Latvian National Biobank – Genome Database of Latvian Population since 2016. She is also involved in BBMRI.LV activities ensuring the communication between the National Node of Latvia with biobanking institutions in Latvia, organising local conferences and seminars and introducing BBMRI-ERIC activities on a national level.
Dr. Rovite has been the BBMRI Latvia National Node Director since 2021. She actively participates in the working group for the development of biobanking law in Latvia and is also a participant of BBMRI-ERIC quality management working groups.
In addition to biobanking activities, Dr. Vita Rovite is a molecular biologist with experience in functional genomic studies in the fields of neuroendocrine tumours and autoimmune diseases. She is currently the leader of several research projects in this field.
